Gunmen Wars © 1998 Namco.
Gunmen Wars is a third person light gun game where players control red or blue robots and have to defeat the opposing team in a death match arena style game.
Players join either the Red or Blue team and have to destroy opponent's robots in order to collect diamonds. The game is over when all of one team's robots are dead or time runs out. When the time runs out the team with the most diamonds wins. The robots can walk freely around the 3D environments but cannot jump. There are three areas to choose from; a hotel roof top, the city streets or inside a mall type building. The two teams consist of 4 vs 4 robots and during the game the number of diamonds collected by each robot is display as a bar. The more diamonds collected the bigger the bar for that robot. Players can see which robot is in the lead and try to focus on them in order to more quickly defeat the other team.
The game uses a unique mounted gun controller which is used both to fire at the screen and also to control the robot movement. Move the gunbase forward, backward or sideways to walk forward, backward or strafe left and right. Rotate the gun left or right to turn the robot.
The game comes in a dual cabinet with two guns and monitors for 2 players, it can be linked to another cabinet for a 4 player setup. The game features Namco's Nam-Cam, a webcam which takes a portrait photo of each player when the game starts. The players actual faces are displayed in the game above their character. At the end of each round the portrait photo is also displayed above the player stats graph which show the score progress during the game.
Gunmen Wars was released in November 1998 in Japan.
