(Ganso Saiyuuki Super Monkey Daibouken)
Sun Wukong must assist the Buddhist monk Xuanzang with his task of collecting some sutras as they make the treacherous voyage from China to India. Other guardians can be asked to join the adventuring party after meeting up with them. Most of the storyline in this video game is based on the Chinese novel Journey to the West. Players can enter a code that allows them to return to any stage at any time; similar to a password system.
It is possible to die of starvation and/or hunger without the proper food/drink items. A meter for water and food are automatically deducted for every move that is made while travelling from landmark to landmark. These food and drink items are found inside people's houses for consumption. Houses appears as buildings representing pagodas. Certain landmarks must be entered in order to progress the game's storyline; these are represented in-game as a grey square with a drawbridge-like structure. An onslaught of enemies must be defeated in the side-scrolling segments of the game.

Ganso Saiyuuki Super Monkey Daibouken was released on November 21, 1986 in Japan. Retail price: 4900 Yen.
It was featured in the Japanese TV show Game Center CX (third season). It was declared to be one of the hardest (and least comprehensible) video games in the history of Japanese video games. It is often considered a kusoge (crappy game). According to the designer; about 300,000 copies were sold due to the Famicom boom.
A strategy book was released in December 1986 by Tokuma Communications.
The programmer of this game, O-san, was a fan of Commodore and Western RPGs like Ultima. They was clearly an inspiration (concepts of day and night, water, and food...).
An explicit message is hidden within the game's tileset (graphic data section of the ROM) containing a developer's personal sexual information:
"Designer: Kaoru Nakajima
26 years old, born 1960 in Toyokawa City, Aichi Prefecture. ...
I wanna lick some pussy!
I want a perverted miss. I like vagina and the clitoris!"
This message did not appear during normal play, and remained unknown to the general public for nearly 20 years after its release.
The manual for this game cames with four application tickets (referred as the "4 major benefits") that can be applied for the following:
1) Entrance ticket for Nippon Television 's TV program " Top Ten Songs " (2000 people will be selected by lottery).
2) Telephone card (1000 people selected by lottery).
3) Make your original graphic novels based on the game experience of this work, best candidates will receive a Sharp CD radio-cassette player.
4) Participation in the official tournament "Tenjiku Famicom Game Ekiden".
Following the release of the game, VAP organized the official "Tenjiku Famicom Game Ekiden" tournament from February to March 1987. The competition involved pairs of players aiming to clear the game up to the Tenjiku level as quickly as possible. Regional qualifying tournaments were held in various cities including Asahikawa, Niigata, Tokyo, Shizuoka, Nagoya, Osaka, Hiroshima, Fukuoka, Kumamoto, and Yamagata. Winners from each region advanced to the final event held on March 30 of the same year at the Tokyo Hilton International. Prizes for winners included plaques, boomboxes, Twin Famicom consoles, and televisions.
The team from southern Kyushu won the central tournament with a clear time of 30 minutes and 19 seconds. Interestingly, the tournament was initially advertised in the game's manual as the "Tenjiku Parent-Child Famicom Game Ekiden Tournament," suggesting that parents and children must participate together. However, in reality, there was no requirement for participants to be parents and children.
